  • Of 2,210 open heart surgeries performed in Floyd County from 2014 through 2019, only 110 (5%) were African American patients. Fifteen percent (15%) of Floyd County’s population is African American, and eleven percent (11%) of the five-county service area is African American
  • Only one other Georgia provider had a lower percentage of African American open heart surgery patients.
  • Of 2,210 open heart surgeries performed in Floyd County over a six-year period, 2,100 (95%) were Caucasian patients.
  • Patients are seeking open heart surgery outside of Floyd County.  Over the past five years, 249 patients (15%) left Floyd County for open heart surgery. In 2018, 55 open heart surgery patients (17%) from the service area left Floyd County for surgery.
  • The price of open heart surgery in Floyd County is third-highest in Georgia.
  • The price of open heart surgery in Floyd County is 141.1% of the state average.
  • In Floyd Medical Center’s Service Area, the age-adjusted African American mortality rate for major cardiovascular disease is significantly higher than the Caucasian rate.
  • In Floyd County, the age-adjusted African American mortality rate for cardiovascular disease (369.9) is 72.7 higher than the rate for Caucasians (297.2).
  • In Polk County, the age-adjusted African American mortality rate for cardiovascular disease (398.9) is 69.2 higher than the rate for Caucasians (329.7).
  • In the five-county service area, the age-adjusted African American mortality rate for cardiovascular disease (343.2) is 50.9 higher than the rate for Caucasians (292.3).
